BRIEF
JMS Lincoln were selected to carry out the Bimagrip LS application to the Gardenia Seaways on various areas of the decks were slipping had become a serious safety issue for the various cargo being transported. The work was dedicated mainly to the weather deck, this had become a safety concern as there was no current anti-skid coating present. JMS pride ourselves on our turn-key ability to work to the marine industries ever tight and changing schedules, we never turn down a challenge by careful planning, thorough preparation and skill of operatives.

PROJECT

The Gardenia Seaways is the second of newly constructed vessels by Flensburger shipyard for DFDS in 2017 that JMS have had the pleasure of working on. The project was completed in the vessel’s short lay-over in Vlaardingen, Saturday 11:30am start – 12pm Sunday working hours.
Because of this short turnaround the client chose a turn-key solution in JMS to prepare the decks sufficiently and apply a new anti-slip surface. Drawings were constructed beforehand with onsite operatives adhering to specification and client’s budget. JMS had to ensure normal operations were not interrupted, so operatives were on standby and as soon as the vessel had finished unloading our works commenced.

The areas were marked out in the various areas of the decks and the teams were split to increase efficiency as time was at a premium, surface containments were removed before the marked-out areas received captive blasting treatment to Swedish standard SA2.5. This was immediately primed using a single component rust inhibiting polyurethane primer to protect the steel work from corrosion and to enhance the bond between the Bimagrip LS system and the deck. Whilst this was ongoing defective areas on the lower deck were being removed before receiving the same blasting and priming treatment.
After the primer had fully cured areas were masked again and Bimagrip LS was installed to the weather decks and lower decks and other small defective areas that were agreed on site that needed new effective surfacing.
The system for this project was chosen to be at 4.5kg/m2 resin loading for the task and was broadcast with 1-3mm Emery Bauxite aggregate to provide a robust and durable finish.

Outcome

The anti-skid coating was completed that day to the various areas to ensure the newly coated areas received a full overnight cure in the dropping temperatures before trafficking. These areas were then swept for any loose aggregates and surrounding perimeters cleaned the following morning. Finishing well before scheduled loading again of the vessel.
JMS Lincoln are proud to have finished the Gardenia Seaways resurfacing in the vessels very short lay-over. 200m2 of anti-skid safety surfacing was installed on various areas around the vessel providing a new practical safe option for all drivers transporting cargo on a regular basis.
