Project - MV Valentine

BRIEF
JMS Marine were nominated to refurbish the MV Valentine, this entailed 600m2 of an existing coating to be renewed at various areas of the vessel’s decks. The work was dedicated to the three most critical loading areas of the vessel. The design of the surfacing was agreed with the client in a ‘zebra stripe’ pattern to maximise as much coverage of the coating as possible whilst remaining on budget. The project was completed in the vessel’s scheduled dry docking in Dunkirk, with plant and materials having to be lifted on/off the vessel.

The multiple areas were marked out in the various areas of the decks, old coating was stripped to steel via mechanical apparatus such as bobcats and breakers. Marked-out stripped areas were cleaned and received captive blasting treatment to SA2.5 standard using rideon machines and diamond grinding by hand for edge work. Blasted areas were immediately primed to manufacturers specification using a single component rust inhibiting polyurethane primer to protect the steel work from corrosion and to enhance the bond between the Bimagrip LS system and the deck. After the primer had fully cured, areas were masked again in the zebra stripe design and Bimagrip LS was installed to specification.


The system for this project was chosen to be at 4.5kg/m2 resin loading for the task and was broadcast with 1-3mm Emery Bauxite aggregate to provide a robust and durable finish.

Outcome

The whole project was completed successfully to the various areas of the vessel within 6 days whilst battling intermittent bad weather and ongoing other engineering works. 600m2 of anti-skid safety surfacing was installed on various areas around the vessel providing a new practical safe option for all drivers transporting cargo on a regular basis. All used resin tubs were also recycled by JMS - trying where we can to reduce our carbon footprint.
